VOL. 9 NO. I - OCTOBER, 1943
THE WAR, THE RAILROADS AND THE GALLERY, This is an S O S to our members for patience and understanding during the coming exhibition season. Naturally, we hope to be able to open each special exhibition event as planned, on time, end with all material nicely labeled and in
place. But this is war and art, of course, has no priority as far as transportation space is concerned. If, therefore, exhibitions and film programs are delayed or fail to reach Rochester as scheduled, we hope that our members will
sympathize with both the crowded railway cars and the empty Gallery walls!

One hundred and fifty contemporary watercolors, comprising the 21st International Watercolor Exhibition assembled by the Art Institute of Chicago, open the Gallery's fall exhibition season and bring to Rochester a wealth of color and mature
painting. Despite war-time difficulties, the exhibition manages to retain some
of its international character with many a war-torn land represented by the work
of its artists-in-exile. Of special interest in this foreign section will be
the large and well-selected group of paintings from Mexico which features the
strong, robust style of Orozco, Diego Rivera, Tamayo and their younger, less publicized colleagues
By far the majority of watercolors, however, come from the United States and
demonstrate anew that Americans have a peculiar skill and facility in the handling of this difficult medium. Ranging stylistically, as well as alphabetically from Ivan Albright's personalized manner to William Zorach's easy brushwork,
the exhibition marks a definite trend from the thin washes of the Sargent tradition to the richer effects of gouache and combined techniques. The large number
of landscape subjects in contrast to the meagre group of still-life arrangements
and the even fewer abstractions prove the American artist's continued absorption
in the American scene. Arnold Blanch, Charles Burchfield, Francis Chapin, Jon
Corbino, Stuart Davis, Adolf Dehn, Phil Dike, George Gross, Ernest Fiene, Doris
Lee, John Sloan, Henry Varnum Poor and Doris Rosenthal are a few of the well-known artists to be included in the event.
As colorful and varied as a Victory Garden harvest will be the annual exhibition
this month of the work of the Gallery's children's classes. Both scholarship and
Members' Children's groups will be included in a lively display of paintings,
drawings, ceramic sculpture and craftwork by young Gallery "artists" ranging in
age from six to fifteen. As an antidote for war worries and ration rigors,
these spirited and gay, tender and whimsical interpretations of childrens'
dreams and visions can scarcely be equaled.
There will be no special event in the Collectors' Corner in October. Activity
this month is being centered on the important loan exhibition of French provincial art which the Collectors' Corner Committee is assembling in November. At
the Foyer Gallery of the Eastman School of Music another exhibition season is
opened this month with the 16th Group Exhibition of Watercolors by Cleveland
artists. The exhibition is on view during the day and concert intermissions.
